Google Glass wearable technology is yet another building block to add to the complex structure of technological disruption. When a technology is replaced by something that promises more efficiency, the impact of the shift from one to the other is not apparent until that technology is fully integrated into society, and in some cases, even embodied by its users. So, imagine a scenario in which everyone is walking up and down the sidewalk wearing Google Glass glasses, able to capture any vision that befalls them, hands-free, not even having to press a button. It is an incredible technology, yet we have to ask how this will impact the way in which we perceive and behave in public?
Google Glass
Google Glass is described as wearable glass (in the form of spectacles). The functions and apps are so incredibly sophisticated that it actually overwhelms us. So what are people using their Google glasses for? There are many uses, but the functions involving vision capturing is something severely impressive.
- Say “take a picture” to take a picture.
- Record what you see, hand- free.
- Even share what you see. Live

Footage for Every Story
In regards to online content, we are faced with a world of video and photos, captured by normal people with normal mobile phones. It will be a difficult mission to find a story online without a supporting image. If Google Glass were to become as accessable and available accross societies as mobile phones have in the last decade, every single online article will be accompanied by photos and footage. And these elements play the roles of evidence. Every story will have its accrediting surveiled evidence in the form of images and footage.
To be Watched and to be Documented
There will be and increase in truthfullness and credibilty in public news. Personal privacy will decrease. The chances of getting away with certain crimes wil become unlikely. In short, you are being watched... by your own glasses and those of others. And what do you do when you suspect that someone is filming you? Some people immediately become actors, others shy away, but what the mojority of people won’t do in such a situation is scratch their noses. Right? Surveilance might mean many things, breeches of privacy, rights etc. But one incredible thing that it causes is this - you are forced to bahave yourself.
You Tell Me
So is the ability to capture anything, anywhere, by speaking a couple of words a scary disruption, possible social corruption , or the promise of a constructive shift in social behaviour?
