When the Left Hand Knows What the Right is Doing

A key to success in productivity is a good workflow system. Every staff member that is involved with a given project in any capacity should have a view of the overall outcomes. The project should be clearly defined with objectives, targets and milestones and all necessary elements of the project should be available for review at any time. The necessity for a good system in these cases is immeasurable. The larger the project or company the more necessary this becomes.

In his landmark book, The Wisdom of the Crowd, James Surowiecki writes at length about groups of people forming an “organism” or hive. His summation is that no single member can produce the sum of the parts that a group can. On a corporate level, a good working team can produce extraordinary results as a “hive”. Communication in a dynamic like this is the vital component and this is where a good system can make or break a project.

A good system ensures that the left hand always knows what the right is doing:

  • The internal system should deliver the right information at the right time.
  • There should be constant “real time” input so that all staff that is involved with a particular project knows about new changes or client requests the moment they come through.
  • Proper information storage goes a long way to accessing data and ensuring that important documents and information do not disappear.

There is nothing more pleasant, productive and refreshing than a company that operates on the simple principles of good communication and a good team dynamic. With a little help, a seemingly ordinary group of people can do extraordinary things.
