Conservation of Energy

By Cathrine Versfeld - 2008 views

Many years ago when early man was wondering, nomadically through the semi-arctic tundra, he had to be careful about how he used up his energy. When you only eat one proper meal once a week, you have to ensure that you have enough energy left to hunt for the next meal. If you overextended yourself on frivolous activities, you may very well have found your body too weak to hunt. I imagine that a quick death would be preferable under those circumstances.

I am thrilled to be living in an age of abundance. There are some that postulate that this ancient need, this need to conserve energy, still exists in us. The idea behind these theories comes down to the belief that “inactivity” is our default state. That the need you feel at night to throw yourself onto the couch and not move has a very real anthropological reason behind it. Of course, we have no need to conserve energy anymore. We are living in a time of great excess. The theory follows that we should fight this natural instinct towards abject “couch potato-ness” because as we all know, hard work is never a waste.

Somebody once said that “hard work is a habit”, and if they didn’t, they really should have, because it’s a fact. There are no secrets here. People who work hard tend to continue to work hard. It’s where sayings like “if you want something done, give it to the busiest person” come from. Once we’re in motion and in the habit of moving, we continue. After all, mankind is nothing if not ambitious, adventurous and industrious. In this great age of available resources, we can certainly afford to be.
