Introducing Virtual Reality Panoramic Images

A New Type of Content

My previous article focused on Gigapan imaging. Completely different but yet another exciting type of content is VR (Virtual Reality) Panoramic Imaging. This photography technique enables your camera to “see” the world beyond peripheral barriers. I’m sure many of you have experienced the disappointment when your camera just doesn’t seem to capture the view as you see it. The vastness and depth of many settings simply can’t be caught and portrayed in one image – or can it?

What Exactly is a VR Panoramic Image?

A VR Panoramic image allows a 360 degree view as well as enables the viewer to interactively pan around and look at the setting from different angles. Imagine standing on a cliff edge and admiring everything around you, from the valley down below to the faraway horizon and clouds above your head. A VR Panoramic image captures all of this.

The idea is that you get the feeling of actually looking at a three dimensional setting, instead of a two dimensional photograph. Because of different perspectives you can zoom in and out as you please.

How Does it Work?

A specialised VR tripod head is used on which a camera is placed. The whole set up is positioned onto a long pole – in some cases as long as nine meters.

Fisheye lenses are the most popular to use as the photographer can cover a full view with only three to eight images. Images should be taken in equal measurement and if only three are taken you would need a full circle of at least 180 degrees.

The images are stitched together using specialised software. This creates a sphere in which the viewer is placed when viewing the complete image.

Get Involved

Ensuring that your content is interesting and engaging isn’t hard to do. If you dig a bit deeper you’ll discover a world of content marketing opportunities just waiting to be discovered. Why use normal images when you can wow your clients (and prospective clients) with immerse imaging?
