Bits, Bytes and Feeds

Have you noticed the language of consumption purveying the internet? (By “consumption” I mean the act of consuming, not the disease poets got in the Victorian era.) We are “fed” by subscribing to RSS feeds. We follow Facebook and Twitter "feeds" (I racked my brain trying to make “threads” work here, impossible). And all this information comes in bytes.

Random Acts of Advertising

Banner ads are booming, against all probability — the click through rate for banner ads is down to 1 in 1000. And a lot of the time, that stat is made up of people that have clicked on a banner by mistake. Yet, companies seem adamant about pouring their marketing budget into something that has been proven not to work.

All around the world people have been saddened by his passing. Twitter was all aflutter trending #stevejobs, #isad and #thankyousteve, Apple shops were strewn with candles and flowers and major leaders, including Obama, weighed in.

Emotican't

Today I thought about “emoticons” - even the word makes me shudder ;). (See, how confusing is that smiley face? Do I mean: “I’m just joking, I love emoticons”? or “Don’t take my anger seriously, this is a light-hearted blog, I am a light-hearted, happy person. Look, even my words are smiling at you”? or “Actually, you can go right ahead and disregard everything I say, ever”?).
