eLearning is not one dimensional and learning today comes in many different types, styles, models and options.  Know the differences and choose the best one that fits your company needs and goals.

This four part series uncovers the two main categories of electronically enhanced or supported learning (otherwise known as eLearning).  These are Synchronous eLearning and Asynchronous eLearning, and like most things in life today, there is the "Third Path".  One is never confined to choosing one extreme or another, so a combination of synchronous and asynchronous eLearning provides us with Blended Learning.  The fourth instalment of this series is an animated video, which summarises this topic.

Synchronous eLearning

Synchronous eLearning – instructor-led online learning.  Must have another person available at the same time at an agreed upon location or platform.

You can use computers (or other technology) when performing your face-to-face corporate training.  The face-to-face part may just be through a screen as is the case when using virtual classrooms and live webcasts, similar to video conferencing.

Text-based Synchronous Learning happens with chat programs and instant messaging.  An audio-based Synchronous Learning occurs when you use audio conferencing, also referred to as live internet radio.  A shared whiteboard is a more interactive teaching method, which needs special programs to perform this and a high speed and stable internet connection.

Typically, Synchronous eLearning makes use of scheduled online classes/exams to get everyone together at the same time for it to happen.
